Weekly Reading Theme Promos
Every week, a one minute reading theme video with ten featured titles is posted on the library web site home page beneath the Reading Themes and Events tab. The video includes short hooks for each book title and a thematically-related song.
If you have a projector and audio, please play at the beginning of Focus Block on Tuesday. It takes very little time, yet can be one avenue of showing our students the many reading options available in our library.
Please support if you are able. Simply click the theme below Reading Themes and Events to play the video.

Indigenous Resources in our
Digital Resource Hub
The library's Digital Resource Hub now has a menu option titled Indigenous Perspectives, intended to help students and teachers locate authentic Indigenous voices through text and media for incorporating into research projects.
AMMSA is a hub of Indigenous periodicals from British Columbia and across Canada. This resource is ideal for current events research written from Indigenous perspectives. Currently our district-based EBSCO and GALE database subscriptions do not include these magazines; therefore, AMMSA helps to fill this gap.
A APTN Lumi and Indigenous Cinema NFB are excellent resources for films and documentaries. Indigenous Cinema NFB does not require a user name/password.
APTN is a monthly subscription fee paid through our library that requires a user name and password. Access information is posted in the Audio-Visual Resources menu of the Staff Hub. Students are welcome to use APTN Lumi but please share log in information with trustworthy individual students only as needed since our school settings are visible and accessible upon log in.
CBC Gem highlights
New additions available through our school's Gem subscription: the movies for the novels Life of Pi and A Gentleman in Moscow. A reminder that user names and passwords to CBC Gems are posted in the Audiovisual tab of the library web page (log into page with vhstaff1914)
New Books to Support Reading Culture
Vic High's Read and Write Club attended the annual pre-Christmas shopping excursion to Munro's Books and choose close to $900 worth of titles for our Classic Literature and Graphic Novels collections. It was great to see students very much interested in classic literature -- including tomes from Russian literature (think Tolstoy, Dostoevsky) which have been added to our library.
Staff Reading Recommendations
"It's the story of a mom from the Philippines who comes to Canada as a personal support worker in order to get her permanent residence. It provides a context to the experience of so many of our own students' families. It is written in a unique perspective, told from the point of view of an egg and eventual embryo inside the mother. Includes Queer and Trans representation. Canadian author."

"This book is a great page-turner. I couldn't put it down. It's historical fiction, so you learn an interesting piece of history about women serving in the Vietnam War."
Recommended by Wendy Burleson
"I loved the novel's exploration of the power that music exerts upon the mind, heart, and soul -- in combined with an engaging mystery/thriller. The music is Gregorian chants, and the mystery surrounds not only the power of the chants, but also the literal mystery of the choir director's murder. This novel is well-written, entertaining, and intelligent popular fiction. Canadian author."
