DVD Resources in our Teacher Resources collection

Don't forget that our library has a collection of films and documentaries that are not available through our online streaming services.

The library now has four external DVD drives that are plug-and -play with your staff computers;  these can be signed out at the circulation desk along with the DVDs.

Please make use of our excellent collection!

Digital Resources

Last month's newsletter introduced our Audiovisual resources including CBC Curio, CBC Gem, APTN Lumi (Indigenous Channel), and Criterion on Demand. All of these resources include vetted and well-organized content that supports secondary school curriculum.

A reminder that you are encouraged to share the library's Student/Staff Guide to Digital Resources for Research On & Off-site.  This guide provide a quick overview of each resource in the Digital Resource Hub as well as off-site user names and passwords;  it's also cross-posted in our Staff Hub/Google Classroom.

If    If you are looking for content to support a theme or learning focus, don't hesitate to ask the library.  Below are a few audio-visual and book resources curated for upcoming days in November.

Student Learning Update & a Plug for a Collaborative Approach to Research Projects

S    Since the beginning of the school year, many classes have come to the library to receive instruction on finding books that are Indigenous authored, finding books for silent reading, citing in MLA and APA style, how to use tools such as citation generators, and the finer points of finessing  citations that citation generators and built-in database citations don't do well.  Classes looking for Indigenous-authored books have had more in-depth teaching about the "why" -- the reasons a Western-centered classification system should no longer be applied to Indigenous-authored resources.

Classes beginning research have learned why databases in the Digital Resource Hub are superior to
general internet searching and how to use search limiters and special features as well as the
C.R.A.A.P. test  to make research more efficient, effective, and enjoyable.

A reminder that supports for student reading/book selection and supports for research in all or parts of
the research and inquiry process are always available.  Talk to Wendy about which parts work best for   a team-teaching approach.

W    It's worth reading Oak Bay teacher's Trevor McKenzie 2019 article for Canadian School Libraries   Journal titled Classroom Inquiry' Secret Weapon: The Teacher-librarian to understand - from a seasoned teacher's perspective -- how a TL helps as a "second teacher in inquiry, an additional support." This collaborative approach  facilitates a "powerful cycle of support that gains momentum and benefits the students, the teacher, and the culture of learning  in the school."
