March 2020 Updates

THANK YOU . . .

. . . to all staff who loaned their image and time for our Freedom to Read Week mugshot poster display.  This display generated significant interest and conversations among our students about intellectual freedom, audience, and personal choice.  Consider being a part of next year's display so we can expand this popular gallery display!

UPCOMING DATES

  • March:
- Women's History Month  and International Women's Day(March 8).  Check out the display adjacent to the library entrance for stories about inspirational, influential women.

AUDIO BOOKS

The library has updated and acquired many audio books -- some of which will definitely be of interest to staff.  Whether you're planning to lie on the beach or recline in a plane seat on an overnight flight, an audio book can be a lightweight and convenient reading option.

Access the full list of audio books at  https://vichighlibrary.sd61.bc.ca/read-listen/audiobooks/  and look at the catalog record which will specify "Audible" or "Libro.fm).  These are the two providers of audio books our library uses.

Next, download the Audible app and/or the Libro.fm app and log in to your mobile device as follows:

Audible log in:

- user name = wburleson@sd61.bc.ca
- password = vhstaff1914

Libro.fm log in:

- user name = vichighlibrary@gmail.com
- password = vhstudent1914

Audio books ARE available to our students but I ask that you not share the user names/passwords with them.  Sook or I will log in and download the books for your students.

**The Top Shelf Student book club has downloaded The Samurai's Garden (Gail Tsukiyama) as their Spring Break read!

PODCASTING 101

Podcasting opportunities continue to be offered in  classes and the library can support you with hardware (headphones/microphones for recording), as well as software and instruction/resources around creating effective podcasts.

The best available source of software in our school for podcasting is Audacity.  This program is available on our desktop computers in the library but it is NOT downloadable on Chromebooks.

For downloadable royalty-free music and sound effects, the library now subscribes to Storyblocks/Audioblocks at a cost of $200 annually.  I have set up a generic user name and log in which you are free to share with students.

Storyblocks/Audioblocks log in:

- user name = vichighpodcasting@gmail.com
- password = vhstudents1914
