May Spotlights -- all staff

VIC HIGH READS -- CROSS-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITY

Our annual tradition continues in a different, yet creative and semi-competitive format. Students grades 9-12 are invited to read any fiction or non-fiction book of interest from our library, and to create a book bento box -- a visual and written or spoken creation that promotes powerful and personal connections to a book. You can view a few examples of book bentos on the display board in the foyer and on Instagram ( @vichighlibrary, #bookbento)

Book bento boxes will be printed and combined into a wall mural for the new library wing on Grant Street -- a colorful reminder of our collective reading and resilience throughout the pandemic.

The competitive part of Vic High Reads 2021 involves a series of point-based challenges to earn bronze, silver, gold, or diamond standing. This optional but fun competition will earn students summer swag -- of the edible and non-edible varieties !

Vic High Reads is also suited as an end-of-year enrichment reading activity for all subject areas -- given its flexible applicability to reading across the curriculum, and the inclusion of non-fiction. There are also a variety of supporting materials already set up in a Google Classroom, negating any extra preparation for teachers. See Wendy as to how Vic High Reads can be adapted for your classroom needs.

VIC HIGH READS -- STAFF PARTICIPATION REQUEST

A few spaces for the Vic High Reads wall mural are reserved for staff contributions. At the survey link below, please contribute the name of a fiction or non-fiction book/author you'd highly recommend to students and a line or two as to why it's a must-read. The book can be something you've read in the last year -- or really anything that stands out to you from past years as a must-read for a grade 9-12 student.

Images of the books recommended by Vic High Staff will be added to the mural, with a QR code link to the rationales. Please complete the survey by May 31.

MAY READING THEMES

The month of May is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions and achievements of Canadians with Asian heritage. You can find additional information and educational resources at the Government of Canada link above and in our library -- including a collection of non-fiction in the library display case and a collection of fiction by Canadians of Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, East Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan heritage.

Please also check out our district's National Film Board Campus subscription for a curated list of nine films for Asian Heritage Month. You can access this resource from the library web site through the Special Subscriptions tab beneath the Staff Resource menu. Remember to log in to the Staff Subscriptions page with the password vhstaff1914.

2. Read to Combat Racism

Our school recently received these posters from the Minister of Education as part of an anti-racism information campaign to shine a light on racism and to encourage British Columbians to examine their own personal biases as well as to take a stand against discrimination. More information about this campaign can be found at www.antiracist.gov.bc.ca

As a starting point to support this initiative in our school, the QR code at left connects to a list of specially curated resources in our library as it reinforces the messages in the posters. Suggestions for additional resources are welcomed!

RESOURCES 2021-22

Near the end of every school year, the library collects information from staff about past and projected resource/service usage.

Please complete the short survey below by May 31; your responses will shape the library's budget requests for 2021-22 and determine ways in which the library can continue to improve supports for you and your students.

*** Thank you for your time in responding to both short surveys!  ***
