READING THEMES - FEBRUARY & MARCH

Freedom to Read Week

Every third week in February, libraries across Canada mark the important of intellectual freedom through access to books -- even those that are deemed controversial.

Vic High Library will feature a selection of  books that have been challenged or banned in Canadian and American school libraries in a large display inside the library and at the entrance.  This display offers a foundational point for learning opportunities around topics such as intellectual freedom, censorship, primary sources, and the role of public institutions such as libraries.

Please consider co-planning a learning activity with the teacher-librarian around one or more of these themes. It is a cross-curricular opportunity since our selection of challenged/banned books relate to literature, history, science, and the social sciences.

Other Forthcoming Reading Themes

Check out the Reading Calendar on the library web site every month.   New weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly themes are featured on the calendar -- and there will be themes beyond Freedom to Read Week for February and March.  Themes in the calendar link to booklists of featured and recommended reads.  Older lists are archived within past months.  Happy reading!
